First Aid

What to Do While You Wait

Basic steps that can make a critical difference before reaching care.

Burns

1 Cool under running cold water for 10–20 minutes.
2 Remove jewellery or tight clothing near the burn.
3 Cover loosely with a clean, non-fluffy dressing.
4 Do not apply ice, butter, toothpaste, or oils.
Seek care for burns larger than your palm or on face/hands

Cuts & Wounds

1 Apply firm, direct pressure with a clean cloth.
2 Keep pressure on for 5–10 minutes without peaking.
3 Once bleeding slows, clean with water, then bandage.
4 Elevate the injured limb above heart level if possible.
Deep wounds, spurting blood, or animal bites need urgent care

Choking

1 Ask "Are you choking?" — if they can speak, encourage coughing.
2 If unable to cough: stand behind, lean forward, give 5 sharp back blows.
3 If back blows fail: give 5 abdominal thrusts (Heimlich).
4 Alternate blows and thrusts. Call 108 immediately.
Do NOT perform Heimlich on infants <1 year — back blows only

Fainting

1 If they feel faint: help them sit/lie down to prevent falling.
2 If fainted: lay flat, raise legs 30 cm to restore blood flow.
3 Loosen tight clothing around neck and waist.
4 Ensure fresh air. Stay with them until fully recovered.
If unconscious >1 minute or seizure-like movement — call 108

These are general guidelines. Always seek professional medical evaluation after any first aid.
